Miss us? Of course you did! This morning we have two amazing stories! First up, Afton Lin! I asked Lin a couple questions to get the inside scoop on what it’s like to be an artist in the kc art district, what motivates her, and just a little about her! Keep reading to see the full interview!

What Inspires your creativity?

“Other artists inspire me the most. I love seeing the process of other artists and figuring out why they made the artistic decisions that they did. Going on instagram and pinterest (to an extent) helps me collect ideas, colors, or subject matters for my own work. Going to local galleries or art events like First Fridays is always fun. I love seeing the work of my peers and being reminded of the limitless creative potential that art has to offer. The material that I'm using also inspires me because I think it's cool to see how to push the boundaries with a certain medium and how to intersect multiple mediums”

What does your artwork represent?

“I like to make graphic and illustrative work with a narrative focus. For my digital work, usually I am interested in creating a scene, character, or cool design. For my sketchbooking I like to experiment with materiality and life drawing.”

How do you make it, in the art community?

“Super big question!! I think that "making it" means something different to each person, but generally I'd say the way to make it is to be active in the local and digital art community. Having a social presence is always good and just showing up and applying yourself to things! I like to work in multiple mediums such as illustration and filmmaking so finding ways to do both separately and combine the two gives me more outlets for creativity. Collaboration is always great. Also, know your own worth! It's so important to charge how much you deserve for your time, knowledge, and skills. We have to uplift other artists and devaluing your art will only hurt everyone else.”

What does art mean to you, and what does it mean for society?

“Art means so much. It is innovation, entertainment, history and record keeping, culture building, and a fulfilling passion. The arts are just as important as science because they give the human experience meaning and life. For illustration specifically, it is a way to tell stories. It is communication in a universal language.”

How does being from KC affect your work in the Artist community?

Kansas City, compared to say LA or NYC has a smaller art scene of course. However, that's not a bad thing. The artists in KC are just as firey as the ones everywhere else. It is more accessible to table or present work in galleries here. And because it's a medium-sized city, I think that it's easier to connect with artists and really find a niche. There's a lot that can be improved on with the KC art scene (cough cough the plaza art fair having mainly just white people cough cough) but there's a growing support for artists and artists of color which is great.”

What is currently your favorite medium?

“digital, pen and ink, poscas, gouache.”

Lastly, but never least, a little about yourself?

“My name is Afton Lin, I am 21 years old, and I am an illustrator, filmmaker, and model based in KCMO. I am going into my senior year at the Kansas City Art Institute. I find the intersection between illustration and filmmaking through storytelling and for my senior thesis I will be working on my original YA graphic novel about a magical art school. I want to work on lots of different creative projects after graduation like directing a movie, making clothes, tufting some rugs for my apartment, writing, shooting a music video, and anything else that I can get my hands on, really. I love working on big projects with other people. I also have been growing my YouTube channel, Afton Lin, where I post vlogs and film content on the side. After school I'd like to move and explore a new city since I've been in KC my whole life (even though I love it).”

Thank you again Afton, and thank you KC!
