Inside w/ Lio!

Before we jump into it, tell us a little about yourself Lio?

"I'm the kid with the pink hair you see at art markets! My name is Lio and I'm a young queer artist born and raised in KC. I've been in love with the art here for as long as I can remember and I'm really glad that I finally get to be a part of it!"

Do you have any advice for any new artist or small business?

"This probably isn't the greatest advice or the most helpful or anything but honestly? Just start. Like jump in headfirst and come to the art markets and talk to everybody and sell your stuff even if you don't have very much, because I think what held me back the most when I started was being too afraid that I wasn't ready or didn't know enough people or didn't have enough product to sell. Getting myself out there and talking to my fellow artists and trying to establish myself in the little scene was really the biggest thing for me."

Your craft is so unique! What do you pull your inspiration from?

"Cartoons, mostly! I spend a lot of time sitting at my desk watching Adventure Time and just drawing. Things like Adventure Time and Chowder and Steven Universe and Gravity Falls have been a huge inspiration for me for such a long time. Cartoons, weird movies, music, the people around me, the city, daytime, nighttime, they're all inspiring."

When and where was your first vendor event? Can you tell us about your personal experience?

"I think my very first was First Friday

April 2022. It was like a dream come true, the people were so nice, everyone loved my work and I got to talk to all these new people! It was everything that I had hoped it would be."

What would you say your favorite art medium is?

"Crappy kids markers and crayons and pencils. It's more fun when I get to draw like I'm a kid, there's less pressure to make something beautiful. It's more fun to be messy."

Where do you see you and your business in 5 years?

"In a perfect world I'll be living off my art. I'll definitely still be doing what I do now, but it'll be evolved!"

What was the inspiration behind your first Instagram post titles "Roobiks Cube"?"

"Honestly I probably just looked at a rubix cube a thought "Yeah I could do something with that." I don't really remember though."

Any new upcoming events or products we should be on the lookout for?

"I'll definitely be at First Friday every month! And you'll probably be seeing me at Art Garden a lot this season. If you're in the local music scene you'll also be seeing me around, I'm hoping to start working with local bands soon! I already make some of Sewing Circle's merch and I wanna do more of that if I get the chance."
