INSIDE W/ KERISTA WYATT

Hello, hello, I hope everyone is having a nice peaceful start to their day! To kick it off we have a wonderful interview with Artist; Kerista Wyatt!

We put together some questions to ask Kerista, to get the inside scoop on what it’s like to be an artist in kc, what inspires her, and just to know a lil more about her, so keep reading to see the full interview!!!

What inspires your creativity?

“My children and my anxiety. I make most of my projects for them and to have something to pass down to their children (if the items last that long). My children are everything to me and I want them to have something I made them and hopefully cherish long after I’m gone. I also crochet to tame my anxiety. Gives me something to focus on besides the constant noise in my head. It helps me relax.”

What does your artwork represent?

“Love. I think I put a lot of my love into my projects because of who it’s being made for. I want them to be looked at and have people smile. 🤷🏻‍♀️“

How do you make it, in the art community?

“I’ve never really inserted myself into the community. I just like to share my work with others in hopes they might like it. I’m not a pro at it so I haven’t tried to sell anything yet. I do it more for fun and to relax.”

What does art mean to you and what it means for society?

“That’s a loaded question. Art has always been apart of my life. Drawing was always my medium. Art was my escape. It was my way of expressing my feelings. Art in general is perspective. Depends on the person, really. Goes with the saying “Another man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Someone can look at something so simple yet see so much beauty, sadness, anger, etc and another person can just see a regular old object and feel nothing. I personally think that’s how you can tell an artist from non artist.”

How does being from KC affect your work in the Artist community?

“Being in the Midwest in general used limit any artist of any medium due to lack audience in “high ups”. But with the growth of social media influence, you can reach many different audiences and reach more people who share your passion. I follow a lot of crocheters on TikTok and love getting tips and tricks from them.”

What’s your favorite art medium?

“Again, loaded question. I’ll always go with my “roots” and say a good quality pencil, blending stumps, and sketch book if I had the time and imagination I used to have as my younger self did. Now good quality yarn and an ergonomic crochet hook are where it’s at!”

Last but neeeever least, a little about yourself!

“My name is Kerista Wyatt. I’m a stay at home wife/mom with 4 beautiful children. My oldest is special needs so she really sparked my desire to learn to crochet because she hyper fixates on things and I wanted to make her something to focus on and it bloomed from there. My husband and I have been married for 3 years on Sept 7. I learned my crocheting skills from my older brother who is an amazing crafter. Knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing- you name it, he does it! I give all the credit for my projects to him because without his lessons, I wouldn’t have a clue! Thanks, Bro!”
