INSIDE W/ JULISSA LOZADA

Good morning Kc, I hope everyone’s Wednesday is going great! Today we have a colorful/ trippy interview from artist Julissa Lozada creator of handcrafted by Jay a local small business here in KC! So let’s hop right in!

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR CREATIVITY?

“The thing that inspires my creativity the most is the desire to make each piece unique and beautiful in its own way. Each color combination, the choice of technique from doing a flip cup or a dirty pour. To torch the piece or to not? To use a hair dryer or a straw? I like to imagine the outcome I'm looking for and have fun in the process of figuring out how I am going to achieve that look.”

WHAT DOES YOUR ARTWORK REPRESENT?

“I think my artwork can represent beauty in diversity. The way the colors blend, the pattern of cell production; it is never the same from piece to piece even if you use the same colors. No matter what color combination I use there is always someone who ends up loving it, each piece I create gets ooohh and aahh, and the people who love that piece are all different to. No matter the age, or gender identity, or ethnicity of the people who compliment they all have something in common and that's my piece of art that caught their eye. It's an indescribable feeling to see your work and hear it be called unique and cool and beautiful from such a diverse crowd of people.”

HOW DO YOU MAKE IT, IN THE ART COMMUNITY?

“Like, follow, and share!!! There are so many artist out there that share art as a passion and create amazing things and it's a community we all want to feel apart of! So I always like other artists post, especially if its something that truly catches my eye or about how they hit a number of followers they've been aiming for because its a great accomplishment and I believe when you clap for others it will soon be your turn to get applause to. I'm always looking for more artist to follow for many reasons, to get inspiration or advice, or because they have a passion and create amazing pieces and who doesn't love to see that in their feed everyday! SHARE! Cause you never know who was looking for something just like that and you can introduce people to artist page and help grow their platform, plus what you give in this community you always get back.”

WHAT DOES ART MEAN TO YOU, AND WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR SOCIETY?

“Art has been my therapy, like many other people in this world I suffer from depression and anxiety and art has been something that can bring me out of that mood and uplift me. Growing up I loved going to farmers markets because there were so many different artist to see. When I first moved to KC I was having a really hard time adjusting to the change and so when I found the Nelson Atkins Museum I would go often because I knew just walking into that building would give me a smile. When I'm working in my studio I am focused on creating and it silences the voices in my head that tell me I am not enough or I wont make it in this world. Art speaks to me and gives me words to express when I myself cannot speak, and I feel like as a society we can all get that from art. Art has so many forms and ways of speaking and uplifting people and I think without art eARTh would just be eh.”

HOW DOES BEING FROM KC AFFECT YOUR WORK IN THE LOCAL ARTIST COMMUNITY?

“I moved to KC when I was 17 years old, and the art community here is nothing like where I am from. The art community in KC is all about being kind to one another, it's about coming together and sharing your passion with people and seeing how other people craft in their passion for art. I've been painting for 2 years now but it wasn't until this year that I really gained the confidence to put myself out there with other artist and now that I have it's like crazy how much more confident I am and that's because how amazing this community is! Artist in this community are just so uplifting and instead of keeping secrets they share them with you to help you grow as an artist and I think that is important, we aren't competing against each other, we are all in it together!”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ART MEDIUM(S) TO WORK WITH?

“My favorite medium is acrylic paint! You can do so much with it, while mixing acrylics with a flow medium to create pours is my primary go to I do sometimes dip my toes into abstract shapes. The paint aisle at any craft store is my happy place, all the different colors, the different textures you can achieve. There are primary and secondary and neon glowing, metallics, auuuuggghhhh it goes on forever and I loooovveeeee it.”

LASTY BUT NEVER LEAST, A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF…
