Inside w/ Ray

Updated: Dec 10, 2022

Heyyyyoooo KC! This morning we had another phenomenal interview with Ray! I asked Ray a couple questions to get the inside scoop on what it’s like to be an artist in the kc art district, what motivates them, and just a little about them! Keep reading to see the full interview!

              INSIDE w/ KC ARTIST: RAY

       What Inspires your creativity?

“Art is breath. I find creativity running through me, and although I don’t quite understand it, I act according to it. Whether it be using two things together in a new way, or delving into myself and finding my breath. I find inspiration to be a bit too fickle. Creativity is urgency, inspiration is short lived. “

        What does your artwork represent?

“My artwork is the lens through which I understand the world. It represents what I’ve been through and what I’ve seen. The ghost in the gallery represents being presented with all the events of your life at once, the worst. Most of my works delve into themes of derealization, anxiety, and beauty presented in stark, not otherwise seemingly beautiful settings.”

How do you make it, in the art community?

“I’ll let you know when I find out. What I do know, it’s about connections. Meet people, get to know them, discuss things on a deep level. Establish relationships with the people in your community.”

What does art mean to you, and what does it mean for society?

“ Art is society in my eyes. It is the most natural thing for humans to do.”

How does being from KC affect your work in the Artist community?

“I have lived in KC my entire life. Although part of me wants to say my work is independent of my current surroundings, I know that the environment I was raised in plays heavily into every aspect of my life, including my art and my perceptions of the world. Going to three different colleges around Kansas before ultimately deciding it wasn’t for me allowed me to make connections in many different places. The art community here is beautiful.”

What is currently your favorite medium?

    “ Acrylic Acrylic Acrylic”

Lastly, but never least, a little about yourself?

“ My name is Ray (They/Them). I love art and do it every day. In between, I enjoy skateboarding, scrapbooking, and taking care of my pets. I have a wonderful partner named Liv, who is my biggest supporter. They inspire growth within me. I have struggled with my mental & physical health, and art helps me every day to heal and continue to grow.”
